How To Care For Your Aquarium (Fish Disease Treatment Guide Included)

In my last aquatic post we went through the process of setting up a freshwater aquarium. Now that you have one up and running and your fish have had time to properly acclimate, you are probably wondering how to go about keeping it clean and healthy. The most important thing to do to achieve that is regular maintenance and up keep. When people talk about aquariums they think it’s hard to keep the tanks and fish healthy. And I want to show you just how easy it is to care for your aquarium and your fish if they get sick.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong with your tank, and tons of fish diseases out there that your fish may come up with, but if you keep your tank clean and regularly maintained, the chances of your fish getting sick are slim to none. Getting a good algae eater (sucker fish) is the easiest way to keep your tank clean, as well as scrubbing any algae off the sides of the tank and siphoning debris from the gravel. It’s also a good idea to get in the routine of changing your filters about once a month. Keeping the tanks clean and fish healthy is easy, but if they do become ill, you need to know how to prevent the disease from spreading and treat them accordingly.

Disease Prevention

Fish can become stressed pretty easily, so maintaining proper water quality and nutrition can reduce such risk. When introducing new fish into the tank you should monitor them for the first few days to watch for any development of disease. If such occur, isolate the sick fish from the tank and treat it accordingly.

Signs of Illness

Disease can come to any and all types of fish, so you need to know what to look for to determine if your fish is sick. Signs of illness include:
  • Unusual Swimming Pattern
  • Thinness or Decreased Appetite
  • Abdominal Swelling
  • Inflamed or Discolored Skin or Fins
  • Fins Clamped To Sides
  • Flashing or Scraping Body On Rocks
All of these above are signs of fish illness and can be treated. Letting your pet store or vet know these warning signs can help determine what is wrong with your fish and you can purchase the needed medication.
